3M Ergonomic Mouse EM500GPLLARGE Review

3M Ergonomic Mouse EM500GPLLARGEThis 3M Ergonomic Renaissance Mouse is great for those with wrist injuries or discomfort because it keeps your thumb pointed in the upward direction, eliminating pressure within the carpel tunnel area. I was pleased to find this new version that uses an optical sensor, a USB connector, and a new graphite color.
Mouse model number EM500GPS is supposed to be for those with palms 3.5 inches wide and less and EM500GPL is for those with palms 3.5 inches and larger. My palm is exactly 3.5 inches wide, I tried both, and the large size was much more comfortable. My fingers were much too cramped with the smaller mouse.I think the recommended cut-off between the two sizes should be about 3.0 inches.
Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks.First, it's for right-handers only. Secondly, it is not quite as precise as a regular mouse because you can't use your fingers to fine tune the position of the pointer, so I occasionally miss target areas and have to reposition the mouse and click again. However, I still highly recommend this product because it helped eliminate my wrist pain, and that is the first priority! You can find info and drivers at the official 3M website: 3m.com/ergonomics/ergonomicmouse.jhtml

Fellowes Gel Black Wrist Rest & Mouse Pad w/Microban (9175101) Review

Fellowes Gel Black Wrist Rest and Mouse Pad w/MicrobanI bought one of these back around late '94 or early '95, and I'm still using it now in mid-'06 (11 to 12 years - wow!). I thought thismodel went off the market years ago, but I guess not.

After several years of use, the pad accumulated quite a bit crud. However, the pad really traps the crud, such that if you look at the bottom of my mouse, the feet have absolutely no dirt around them, whereas mice feet tend to scrape up stuff on most pads and certainly on a desk. Since my mouse stays clean and the crud doesn't affect the optical tracking, I've just not had enough incentive to clean it and so I haven't.

Aside from the dirt, the pad itself shows very little wear. This really surprises me given how heavy a user I am. Also, the gel pad shows virtually no wear. There are only two slight negatives that I can think of:

1) When I purchased the pad, it had a sort of oily film on the underside of the gel pad, like a lubricant. Not sure what it was for--perhaps a conditioning agent for the rubber--but it's still there after all these years. You can actually turn the gel pad over and draw in the oil. However, I've never tried to clean it, and in fact have always kept the pad in its place except for pulling it on rare occasion to see if the oil is still there. (Not sure where I expect it to go, but heh...) In use, you would never know it's there and you never come into contact with it, so even if you leave it, as I did, there's no danger of it getting on your cloths or anything.

2) The lycra finish on the gel pad is nice in that it doesn't make your wrist sweaty as a lot of gel pads can. And as I said above, it's very durable. However, you can very easily leave cosmetic scratches in it by, for example, fairly gently scratching a fingernail across the surface. These marks are not permanent, though. As far as I can tell, they're very similar to vacuum marks on carpet, and they can be rubbed out or they will simply disappear with a few hours' use. But if you handle the pad, you may look at it afterward to find it all "scratched" up, which is a bit disconcerting.

In one of the many (living quarters) moves I've made with it, the front part got cracked, but other than a crack being visible, it's not affected usability one iota.

I'd kinda like to replace it just for the sake of getting something new, but I'm having a hard time justifying it. I do think the pad requires a bit more effort to move the mouse compared to good modern pads, and that may become my incentive, but for the moment, at least, I'm sticking to it.

BTW, I'm a professional computer user who spends 10-20 hours per day (sometimes more) working on my computer, and with multiple big monitors, I use the mouse an awful lot. Thus, this pad has gotten *very* heavy use over the years. I've also had very few problems with my rather picky wrist, so it seems to a do a good job ergonomically, as well. (In case you're wondering, I use a Kinesis Contour ergonomic keyboard to handle the other half of general input. It's simply wonderful - I highly recommend it to any heavy computer user.)

Kensington Wrist Pillow Mouse Pad (Black) Review

Kensington Wrist Pillow Mouse PadI wanted a mouse pad that worked well with optical mice - i.e. fine movements of the mouse resulted in fine movements of the mouse cursor. You'd be surprised how many mouse pads 'optimized for optical mice' have jerky movement or just scoot off to some location on the screen when you least suspect it.

I wanted to use a wrist rest with it. I tried the gell rests, both attached to the pad and not. Most I found to be too hard and uncomfortable (YMMV). Most were in some kind of plastic that caused my wrist to sweat more than usual and so it would get sticky and irritating. Some smelled really bad for months. Some smelled really bad and never stopped smelling really bad.

The bean bag wrist rests felt good - to me - but they keep sliding off the desk. Which is a pain.

So, I came back to this little cheapy. Works great, doesn't slide around on the desk - butI CAN move it when my arm just wants a different position. The integral wrist rest works great - though perhaps the *slightest* bit soft.

Only problem is that after about a year, the weight and sweat from my wrist eventually wears out the rest and I need a new mouse pad. Like now.

Oh, I work about 14 hours a day at my computer. Everyday. Hey, I do too have a life.

Fellowes 9175301 Gel Wrist Rest w/Microban® Product Protection - Graphite Review

Fellowes 9175301 Gel Wrist Rest w/Microban® Product Protection - GraphiteI put in a lot of hours in front of my keyboard and a wrist rest is an absolute necessity. Of all of those I've tried, this one is the best.

Problems with other wrist rests include that they pop open at the seams and the gel goo comes out, that the wrist rest deforms in the areas where I regularly put my wrists, etc. This wrist rest has none of these problems.

3M Office Gel Wrist Rest for Keyboards ( WR302MB ) Review

3M Office Gel Wrist Rest for KeyboardsI'm currently using the wrist rest to write this review, and it's providing decent support at my desk.If you are looking for a cushy rest that your wrists will sink in to, avoid this rest as the gel inside is firm and does not budge much with use.The rest slides around a bit over the course of a long day, but actually stays put better (due to its heftier weight) than some other wrist rests I've used.

As wrist support is extremely important for someone using a computer for long periods every day, I'm pleased with the purchase as it's keeping my hands off the desk. It's also flat on one side (so it can be snuggled against the keyboard), but unfortunately the size of my hands forces the rest has to be pushed back a distance.

Overall, select a rest based on how much 'give' you'd like.If firm is your style, buy this one.Otherwise, look at some of the other offerings on the site.
